In June of 1998 the first meeting of the Saskatchewan
Reindeer Association (SRA) was held. From that meeting the mission
statement of the Association was established and the constitution was
formed.

Our Mission Statement:
-
to promote a healthy industry by providing seminars,
feed analysis, disease prevention information, and animal care; and
-
to provide a system that records, certifies and
keeps the pedigree of reindeer in Saskatchewan.
The SRA is meeting
these goals by:
-
working with producers and government to obtain DNA
information of all the reindeer in Canada;
-
working with the Reindeer Owners and Breeders
Association of USA to establish a Canadian registry of the pedigree
of each animal in Canada;
-
working with the Provincial and Federal Governments
to acquire a protocol that will suit the high health and disease
controls to promote a healthy animal, and to provide introductory
courses about the industry;
-
locating knowledgeable speakers to bring to the
province to promote public awareness of the industry; and
-
working as a group to help with the marketing of
velvet, the marketing of breeding stock, and to supply information
to the public about the industry by attending Agribition.

SRA now has a membership of 30 full and associate
members and approximately 170 reindeer across Saskatchewan, and
continues to grow. SRA has nine Board of Directors and meets on a
regular basis. Quarterly newsletters are sent to all the members,
which indicate what meetings are coming up, information from other
Reindeer Associations, classified ads, and other information on reindeer
that is of interest to the group.
